Single mothers wishing to return to school have few excuses for getting the education they want and deserve because a wealth of information and funding for them to do so abounds.

These funds are grants that do not have to be repaid. Unlike student loans, grants are gifts, essentially free money that helps to defray the costs of getting an education. Although certain requirements must be met to secure a federally funded grant, the process and simple and can be completed in a few minutes.

In order to determine if a single mother qualifies for financial aid, her first step is to complete a Free Application for Federal Aid (FAFSA). This can be done online at fafsa.edu.gov.

Once the FAFSA is complete and the financial aid is determined, single mothers may qualify for a host of federal, state and institutional grants. Pell Grants, The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG), and Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant Program are among the most popular federally funded grants.

Pell Grants are need based grants awarded to students who are enrolled full time, and seeking their first undergraduate degree. For the 2009-10 school year (July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2010) the maximum Pell Grant award is $5,350; however, because the amount depends on its funding, the maximum amount can change each award year.

The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) is for Pell Grant recipients with the lowest expected family contributions. FSEOG recipients can receive between $100 and $4,000 a year.

An Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG) provides $750 for the first year of study and $1,300 for the second year. Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant Program provides grants of up to $4,000 per year to students who intend to teach in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves students from low-income families.

Although many opportunities exists for single mothers to secure grants to fund their education, federally funded grants are among the most secure and generous grants available for education.
